Bert Lochs plays a Van Laar B8 trumpet and a van Laar B2 flugel. A customized Curry 10.5C trumpet mouthpiece and a self designed piece on his flugelhorn. Both pieces share a sixties (Ratzenberger) Jettone rim.

Also wonderfully frugal and restrained is trumpet player Bert Lochs' new trio, with pianist Dirk Balthaus and tuba player Daniel Herskedal. Parallels with Eric Vloeimans' music are easily drawn, partly due to Lochs' expressive, almost classical sounding compositions, but this trio undeniably has its very own characteristic style. Lochs makes his trumpet sound syrupy and warm; Balthaus' rivulets of notes sound alluringly alert; and a tuba seldom sounded so tender and versatile as in Daniel Herskedal's hands.
